5 Simple Things You Can Do To Help

Here are some ways you can help:

1. I'll CIRCLE up. Whenever possible, I'll shop at locally-owned stores because I know that three times as much of my money will stay in here in Austin than if I'd shopped at a national chain. If I must go big-box (and we all need to sometimes), I'll shop anywhere but Wal-Mart because I know they lead the industry in harmful business practices. As a consumer, I know that business won't act responsibly until I do.

2. I'll tell City Council I support ABIA's Independent Business Investment Zones.

3. I'll tell City Council we need a big box plan. Austin shoppers still enjoy a healthy range of retail choices. Let's keep it that way! I want city leaders to develop a serious plan to keep our shopping options balanced and our local economy healthy, including a Conditional Use Permit for big box development, increased notice to neighbors, and a plan to keep local businesses strong and viable.

4. I'll send a message to Wal-Mart about corporate responsibility. Wal-Mart is the top Fortune 500 company, the largest private employer in the US and the largest company on the planet, taking in over $7 billion dollars in profit each year. Yet it refuses to pay the majority of its employees a livable wage, is woefully short on health coverage compared to other major employers, leads the pack in labor violations and is a top killer of American manufacturing jobs. As a consumer, I'll pledge not to shop at Wal-Mart until it makes serious changes in the way it does business.

Tell Wal-Mart I won't shop there until it takes the lead on corporate responsibilty.

5. I'll tell my friends and family.
